Donate Life America assists in mobilizing the transplant
community to educate the American public on the need
for organ, eye and tissue donation and motivating the
public to make an actionable donor designation. The
organization publishes brochures, program kits and
other materials; provides technical assistance and
referral services; coordinates the national campaign for
organ, eye and tissue donation; identifies measurable
best practices and leads the Donor Designation
Collaborative.
It is comprised of national organizations and
47 local affiliates across the United States that coordinate
donation related activities at the grassroots level.
Donate Life America is a 501(c)(3) organization based in Richmond, Virginia, operating with funds from membership, general contributions, and the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). The National Campaign is financed through the annual UNOS Donate Life Assessment of member transplant centers, organ procurement organizations and histocompatibility labs and generous donations from other members of the organ, eye and tissue transplant community.
Since 1994, Donate Life America has launched more than a dozen multi-media campaigns to promote organ, eye and tissue donation. Campaigns include those geared to general, Hispanic and African American audiences - each focused on the life-affirming aspects of donation. The current Empowering Testimonials campaign features actual transplant recipients telling their stories and urging the public to Donate Life. All campaigns aim to inspire the public to designate their donation decision.
A national quantitative study commissioned by Donate Life America in 2004 showed that while 91% of adults support the idea of organ, eye and tissue donation, only one in three is aware of the proper steps for committing to become an organ, eye and tissue donor, as procedures differ from state to state.
In fall 2006, Donate Life America launched the first Donor Designation Collaborative. This collaborative effort, based on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Collaborative Methodology, has the national aim of increasing the number of Actionable Donor Designations in the United Stated from a current estimate of 60 million to more than 100 million by April 2008. This will mean that more than 100 million Americans will take actions required in their state to ensure that a donor designation is recognized and honored. The Donor Designation Collaborative strategy is to identify and spread best practices in the areas of measurement and analysis; effective partnerships and relationships; and registry development, management and promotion. Additional focus will be on founding registries in states that do not currently have them, fixing existing registries that are not high-functioning and filling effective registries that already exist.
